Bluefin Fish Commands Record Sum of $3.2m at Japanese Capital Auction
A massive bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2m; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the new year.
The top offer for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the parent firm of a popular sushi chain, which runs outlets throughout Japan and overseas.
"An inaugural tuna heralds a prosperous start," stated the entrepreneur, a notable bidder at the traditional new year's auction.
Referred to as the Tuna King, this entrepreneur is noted for placing substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.
Auction Shock and Record-Setting Past
After the auction, the successful bidder informed journalists that he was "surprised at the final price," stating, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little at a lower price, but the price soared rapidly."
This new purchase tops his previous historic purchases:
- He paid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).
Despite previously commenting that he thought he "did too much," he has now proceeded to break his own record yet again.
An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally known for exceptionally high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which indicated the fish would be available at its locations throughout the country.
The high-energy energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has transformed into a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was no exception.
Swift Service
The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly prepared for patrons at the bidder's sushi restaurants immediately after the auction ended.
"I believe like I've begun the year in a positive way after tasting something so auspicious as the year gets underway," said one elated customer.
