Following more than six weeks, the longest US government shutdown in the nation's history is coming to an end.

Federal workers will resume obtaining pay again. Federal parks will return to normal. Federal operations that had been curtailed or completely halted will resume. Aviation services, which had become a nightmare for many Americans, will revert to being merely frustrating.

What Was Achieved?

Once the situation calms and the ink from the President's signature on the funding bill becomes official, what has this record-setting shutdown accomplished? And what price was paid?

The Democratic minority, through their use of the parliamentary filibuster, were able to trigger the shutdown even though they were a minority in the senate by rejecting a Republican measure to offer interim support to the government.

The Democratic Position

They established an uncompromising position, requiring that the majority party consent to continue healthcare financial support for financially struggling individuals that are scheduled to end at the conclusion of December.

When a handful Democrats broke ranks to vote to reopen the government on recently, they received minimal concessions in return – an assurance of consideration in the Senate on the subsidies, but no certainties of GOP backing or even a necessary vote in the lower chamber.

Democratic Tension

While his poll numbers have decreased over the recent weeks, there remains a twelve months before the majority party have to confront constituents in the midterms. And, barring some kind of basic governmental alteration, Trump never has to worry about facing voters subsequently.

Governmental Next Steps

After the resolution of the shutdown, Congress will get back to its regularly scheduled programming. Although the House of Representatives has largely been inactive for several weeks, GOP members still expect they will pass some meaningful laws before next year's election cycle commences.
