Feeling So Sick Walking Was Impossible Until a Fellow Passenger Essentially Lifted Me to the Toilets.

Back when I was 19 years old, my morning travel involved an express bus. It was perpetually jammed and was consistently without any seats once I boarded.

During a certain commute, I began feeling incredibly sick when the coach swayed around every turn. I kept telling myself to endure for a few more stops before the bus got to my stop, at which point I could rush hurriedly toward the most convenient public toilet to throw up.

The bus was approaching the avenue close to the stop when it dawned on me I was unable to make it. Suddenly, it was like a curtain fell over me. My vision turned hazy and muffled; as if someone cut the sound. I thought, “I will lose consciousness”.

Thankfully, I was positioned near the front on the bus, allowing me to take a few steps forward and requested that the driver to open the doors, explaining to him I needed to get ill. The driver opened the doors and I hurriedly stepped out onto the street.

I was resolved to not get sick in front of six lanes of traffic, so I forced myself up and endeavored to walk across to the park on the other side, thinking I could I’d at least be able to find some privacy behind a bush to be sick. But then I likely lost consciousness. I was aware of my physical self, yet walking was impossible or see clearly, leading me to start dragging myself toward the grassy area.

“You right, love?”

In that instant, someone picked me up. There was a strong arm supporting me and a man’s voice asked, “You right, love?” I explained to this unknown man that I had to to vomit. Therefore, he almost helped me walk over to a close-by structure and guided me into the female bathroom. He asked me if I needed him to stay with me but I said no.

After a short while, I regained my composure to the point of sitting on the restroom floor and from the other side of the door I heard his voice asking, “Are you feeling better, dear? Is there anything you require?” I wasn’t able to get up at that moment but I was able to say thank you and shortly thereafter recovered the use of my feet. I returned home and then spent the following days healing from what turned out to be a nasty tummy bug.

I never saw the stranger’s face – only his legs and the big steelwork tools container he was carrying – yet he rescued me, during a time when I was at my most vulnerable.

Often this world tends to make people guarded, hostile, and combative. His act was the type of kindness that melts away that protective shell. He demonstrated that people’s natural inclination leans toward compassion, a quality I adore about my fellow humans.
