Hamilton Island, a Popular Tropical Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Private Equity Firm.
A major tropical holiday destination located on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“It is an honor to continue the legacy and commitment that the family owners has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
The family issued a comment noting they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Size and Amenities
Positioned almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the area is developed, including a substantial range of facilities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a wide network of local partners, suppliers, and area businesses.
A Look Back at The Island's History
The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and vintner, first bought the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsundays.
The island's development boom first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and southern states.

The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
