Has Pizza Peaked? Domino's Pizza CEO Departs After Shift Towards Chicken.
A head of the UK's Domino's Pizza chain who proposed the United Kingdom might have hit pizza saturation while expanding the franchise into poultry items has been ousted after disagreements with its directors.
Executive Transition
The former CEO is exiting after just two years in charge, and will be replaced on an interim basis by the organization's chief operating officer, Frampton, while the pizza giant seeks a permanent CEO.
The outgoing executive, who was with the company for a substantial period, had attempted to shift the UK's biggest pizza delivery company towards chicken offerings, commenting recently there was not “massive growth” left in the pizza sector in the UK. He said chicken was the most rapidly expanding food category in the international market.
Board Tensions
It is understood that there was friction between Rennie and the board over his approach and management style, although the company's official statement said he was leaving “by mutual agreement”.
New Brand Launch
In the autumn, Domino's unveiled its chicken-focused offering – which the former chief referred to as a “significant new phase” for the organization – and is testing it in 210 outlets in the north-west of England and the province.
While the business is still planning to expand it across its nearly 1,400 branches next year as scheduled, it views fried chicken as a supplement for its primary pizza operations.
Board Statement
Ian Bull, the Domino's chairman, commented: “We are confident that there are a series of prospects to enhance value and performance improvement in the main pizza segment. We are prioritizing identifying the suitable leader to direct the systematic rollout of that development approach.”
Industry Difficulties
Recently, the pizza delivery giant, which has 13 million customers in the British Isles, said transactions dipped by one and a half percent in the latest quarter. In the summer, it cautioned that the quick-service industry had “become tougher” as it attributed reduced spending in the lead-up to the government announcement and higher payroll outlays for weaker-than-expected sales and a 15% drop in six-month income.
Rival chains are also experiencing difficulties. Pizza Hut announced the closing of multiple locations a recently, after the business behind its UK venues fell into administration.
Wellness Initiatives
Adapting to customer preferences towards healthier eating, the company has introduced reduced-calorie products, such as its thin-crust line of bakes below 400 kcals as well as meat-free and wheat-free pizzas. A large pepperoni pizza has 2,311 kcals. A family cheese pizza has over 2,100, while a personal has under 1,000 calories.
Interim Management
The interim chief has been with the company since 2021, and had a background at the betting firm William Hill. It is thought that she is not seeking to occupy the CEO position long-term.
She commented: “The company has a number of active expansion and operational projects that we will be concentrating on implementing at speed.”
She said these comprised ongoing development on the company's logistics network and product development, and its customer retention initiative.
The pizza chain is also without a full-time CFO until 16 March, when a new appointee starts from the drinks company a well-known firm. For now, Richard Snow acts as interim finance chief.
