Israelis have come together around the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the war in Gaza.

The incident led to more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most lethal day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel reacted by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"Our aggressive adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the leader stated on Tuesday.

He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities delayed official commemorations until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred around the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was observed across the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams gathered in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to examine the conditions of the agreement.

A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an late session of negotiations commenced at evening in Egypt.

The representative said the earlier meeting ended without tangible results, because of conflicting views over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the first phase of the agreement.

He noted that the talks are "difficult and have not yet achieve any significant progress," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to close the differences between the conflicting groups.

Critical Points in Negotiations

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the hostages still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance distribution
  • Post-war administration of the region

Citizen Reaction

In the city's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother endured the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - told: "No location feels like home now and until all the hostages come back not a single person will have peace of mind."

"Once we see all home returned, we can breathe once more. Then we can begin to heal," she concluded.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.

Protester a participant remarked: "We must do any agreement required for the abducted to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be safe."

Surveys now consistently show that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to end in return for the freedom of the abducted.

Gaza Situation

At the area of the music event, those paying respects came together to honor the dead.

From that location, the noise of military attacks and explosions could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people said the heavy Israeli bombardment continued.

In the urban center, bombardments were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and zone districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the northwest.

"As the night arrives, the anxiety arrives with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli air strike previously, described.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the attacks. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who rests his face on me all night."

"Every second we look at the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be finalized and that the war will resume to us."

Health Emergency

The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had accepted the corpses of six people by the daytime, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli bombing in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of that area indicated another two dead people had been brought there. An individual was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get assistance to the south region, medical staff reported.
