Miami Heat & Trail Blazers Claim Initial Victories After Recent Arrests
The Miami Heat put up 86 opening half scores versus the Grizzlies
Miami Heat secured a decisive 146 to 114 victory over the Grizzlies in their initial basketball match after guard Rozier was detained over alleged unlawful gambling.
Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained as part of a sweeping FBI investigation into sports betting. Both men contest the allegations.
However, the Miami team were focused as they recorded eighty-six opening half scores to be ahead of Memphis by 39 at halftime, the largest halftime lead in the franchise's 37 year history.
Adebayo led the way with 24 scores and later stated Terry had the team's full backing.
"We support him. Full support," Adebayo said. "You support him through and through. He's like family at the end of the day."
Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Terry is a person who is important to everyone. He has made a beneficial influence on our locker room.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces the situation."
Portland additionally won their first game after the detentions, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as temporary head coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and leading the team to a convincing 139 to 119 victory against the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had positive times with Chauncey and his coaching style," Tiago said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but we have a job to do."
League Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' by Arrests
Speaking about the detentions for the first time, league head Silver stated he was "very upset" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the integrity of the competition," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I had a pit in my stomach. It was disturbing."
Silver further said an NBA investigation into Rozier's actions in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Charlotte Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the regulators and the gambling firms," he added.
"We investigated the matter and were open about it. Although there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA can't do.
"Therefore, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they announced yesterday was an indictment.
"Moreover two and a half years later, he has not been found guilty of any offense, in fairness to Terry.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance here between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
