Polls Open in Holland as Polls Suggest Possible Second Victory for Firebrand Leader Geert Wilders

Voting has commenced for parliamentary elections in Holland, with recent surveys indicating that the anti-immigration firebrand Geert Wilders and his Freedom party (PVV) could once again win the most seats, although analysts suggest PVV stands little chance of being part of the future coalition.

Survey Results and Election Dynamics

Wilders' party, which previously pulled off a surprise top result and established a four-party all-conservative government that lasted barely a year, is currently slightly leading in the polls and is forecast to secure between 24 to 28 MPs in the 150-member house of representatives.

However, PVV's popularity has dipped since 2023, when it secured 37 seats. Every significant political group have publicly ruled out entering into a coalition with Wilders, who triggered the fall of the previous government in June over disagreements concerning his controversial immigration proposals.

Key Contenders and Forecasts

Following a campaign focused on topics such as immigration, healthcare costs, and the country's severe housing shortage, the centre-left GL/PvdA coalition, headed by ex-EU official Frans Timmermans, is running a close second, expected to win between 22 and 26 seats.

Also forecast to do well is the liberal-progressive Democrats 66, projected to boost its representation nearly fivefold to 21 to 25 seats, while the right-leaning CDA is anticipated to significantly increase its number of MPs to between 18 to 22.

Members of the previous government – comprising the Freedom Party, VVD, populist Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), and NSC – are all forecast to see their representation reduced, with some facing heavy losses.

Voting Process and Political Division

In the Netherlands' electoral system, gaining just less than one percent of the national vote yields a party one MP. Of the 27 parties participating in the vote – which include senior-focused parties, for youth, for animals, for a universal basic income, and for sport – as many as 16 may gain entry to parliament.

This significant fragmentation means that no single party is ever likely to win a majority, and Holland has been ruled by coalitions – typically composed of several groups in recent governments – for over 100 years.

Post-Election Scenarios

The PVV leader claimed that "democracy will be dead" in the Netherlands if the PVV becomes the largest party yet is shut out of government. However, critics and analysts argue that winning the most seats does not assure government participation and that any governing alliance with a majority is democratically valid.

While the election result is hard to predict and government negotiations may require months, analysts suggest that following the most radical administration in its recent history, the future government is likely to be a broad-based coalition led by either the centre-left or moderate right.

Election Day Details

Voting locations, including those in the miniature city Madurodam in the capital and the Anne Frank museum in Amsterdam, opened at 7:30 AM (6:30 GMT) and will conclude at 9pm. A typically reliable exit poll is expected shortly after the polls close.

After the vote, an official negotiator will explore potential governing alliances that could command a majority in the legislature. Prospective coalition members will then draft a governing pact for the next four years and must undergo a confidence vote in parliament before assuming power.
