A whistleblower has disclosed the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK failed to secure classified equipment allowing the Taliban to track down local individuals who collaborated with western forces.

Information Leak Puts Numerous at Risk

The source, known as Person A, explained that individuals impacted by the security lapse were advised to change residences and alter their phone numbers to protect themselves from the Taliban.

Members of Parliament are investigating official management of a serious leak of confidential data affecting almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had asked to move to Britain to escape the Taliban.

How the Leak Was Discovered

An electronic document with their personal data, comprising identities, addresses and sometimes family information, was inadvertently disclosed by a worker employed at UK special forces headquarters in early 2022.

The breach came to light in late 2023, when identities of multiple applicants who had sought to relocate to Britain surfaced on Facebook.

Impact of the Information Leak

Initial findings submitted to the committee indicated that approximately fifty family members and associates of people concerned by the incident had been murdered.

A legal restriction concerning the breach was put in force in late 2023 and restricted relevant facts about it from being made public until recently.

Security Recommendations

Due to legal constraints, Person A and the aid group she collaborated with informed Afghan families they were supporting that they had “apprehensions that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.

“We recommended that they change residence if they could and changed their mobile numbers. That constituted the primary information that, should militant forces acquired this information, would result in them being traced,” she said.

Disputed Conclusions

Person A contested that government assessment performed by an ex-government employee had been incorrect to determine that the obtaining of the information by the Taliban was “minimally impact current risk levels”.

“The important fact is that these Afghans are not confronting the authorities; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves former occupations.”

She detailed terrible abuse experienced by at-risk Afghans, comprising electric shock torture, waterboarding, and physical abuse.

“There are cases of young kids who have had bones crushed to try to get households to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
